Similar craft using both sail and oars may still be seen throughout the Indian coast, Sri Lanka, the South Arabian Coast and the Red Sea. Vasco da Gama first saw Arab sewn vessels such as the Dhow in Mozambique after he rounded the Cape of Good Hope in 1498.
